What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own thing, a blog, a company, etc.?
“Have a plan, but be flexible” When I started my business, I didn’t take myself seriously until I was a few years in. Then at that point I felt like I should be further than I was, but how could I be when there was no plan or actionable steps. I would say, try really hard to get the financial aspects and plan in place and work backwards to see how you can best achieve your goals. That being said, stay open to opportunities that could end up being a main income earner or passion project that fuels your soul. Those are always the projects I feel best about, and if they can be an integral part of your business, then all the better. Also — find a mentor or coach. I have found these people who have helped keep me accountable and on track to my goals.
Do you have a favorite quote that inspires you or inspired you to keep going?
“I am right on time.” After a full 2017 with 3 family weddings, the loss of my dad, and building out my business platform, I found myself being anxious. I was often worried that I was behind, or missing things. And one of my pet peeves is being late to pretty much anything, so after some deep soul work with my reiki guru Kelsey, we came up with the mantra that I will be implementing for 2018, and its: I am right on time. This speaks to my business growth, my personal grief and healing. Any and every aspect of my life, in all honesty, will be done with this mantra in mind!

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own thing, a blog, a company, etc?
The hardest part of starting a business is actually starting the process. I had a vision to create a platform that was multidimensional, represented diversity and covered the best in entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, food & drinks, travel, events, and philanthropy. It started out as a creative passion, then turned into a successful business.
When launching STYLE & SOCIETY Magazine, the most challenging part was coming up with my business name and finding a domain that was available. The internet is so saturated with content, most of the initial business names you will probably think of, may already be taken. It took me more than a year to come up with the business name STYLE & SOCIETY Magazine. Once I had the name secured, I created a logo, built the website and populated the site with content I had created over the past two years.
Today, there are so many free resources and tools available to help kickstart your business. A few resources I used when starting STYLE & SOCIETY Magazine includes GoDaddy for the domain and hosting, Freelancer for website design and logo, WordPress to build the website and DBA 4 Less to register DBA (doing business as) filing for business and trademark. Once you have all the essentials in place, maintaining your website for your business will become turnkey.
Do you have a favorite quote that inspires you or inspired you to keep going?
I have a few favorite quotes I love, which were part of the inspiration behind the name STYLE & SOCIETY Magazine. In the business name, STYLE represents more than just fashion….it’s about LifeSTYLE and defining your own personal sense of style. The SOCIETY is how we interact with one another through food, travel, entertainment, and more.

“Fashion Fades, Style is Eternal” Yves Saint Laurent
“Fashion, it’s about creativity, confidence and creating your own personal sense of style” Kinya Claiborne
People tell me all the time how envious they are of my lifestyle and the success I’ve been able to achieve. I tell them to turn their passion into a business and create life you want to live, as I did. Success isn’t measured by the amount of instagram followers or the money you make. Success is measured by setting your own personal goals, your happiness and the impact you make in the lives of others.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own thing, a blog, a company, etc?
As far as advice goes, the first thing that pops into my mind is create a brand you love. Whether is a blog or a product/new company, it has to be something you are passionate about in order to come across as genuine. To be honest, I’ve work a million times harder on my blog than I ever did when I had a “real job’ because I love every second of it. I hope my passion is evident and I believe it is the only way a brand will truly be successful.
The other tip I’d give others is to truly focus on high-quality content. Over the last year, I’ve tried to create better content instead of just cranking out material. Whether it is high-quality photos or helpful blog posts, the content is what people care about these days.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own thing, a blog, a company, etc?
I would say to absolutely go for your dreams, listen to your heart and believe in yourself. Never underestimate the power of passion and hard work. If you love it, you will do it. If you do it, you can be incredibly successful! Just stay positive, and never ever give up on yourself.
