Here at The Modern Day Girlfriend, we highlight the changes that have occurred in the dating scene since the Internet hit our airwaves. Texting, dating apps, and social media have helped shape the way we communicate, stay in touch, find and stay in love, and even can affect our self-worth.

Gone are the days of picking up the phone to call a girl, so say hello to the days of trying to decode the meaning behind text messages and the cute, yet confusing Emoji language.

A topic that I discuss often on the Modern Day Girlfriend is texting and today’s blog touches on that same subject. Below, I share with you three types of text messages you might receive from a man who could be interested in you, but is “texting” it all wrong.

Here are 3 types of text messages you should never respond to (or wait a day to reply if it’s really tugging on your heart strings.)

Hey..

Hey? Umm Hi yourself? Is there a reason for this text, or was this a bad horse joke? (“hay” is for horses, haha..) Okay, granted the guy is thinking about you, but there isn’t really any effort behind this message. His brief salutation is more like he is testing to see if you are interested. If you are interested, go ahead and respond, but wait a bit. If you aren’t really feeling this guy in the first place, don’t even bother responding. It doesn’t make you a bad person.

“What Are You Doing, Can I Come Over?”

Ladies, this one I am keeping simple and to the point! If this text comes any time after 10pm at night, I would suggest not answering it. I think it is safe to say that this is a booty call kind of text.

“Want To Meet Up Later?”

This one can be tricky. If he sends this to you during the beginning of the day, it probably means he already has plans, but he is thinking of you and wants to see you at some point. However, if he asks to meet up with you later and you reply back with “what time were you thinking,” but you don’t receive a response till later in the day or night, like Elsa says, “let it go!” He may have had plans come up or change. Don’t take it personally if casual plans fall through or if he gets busy, especially in the early dating phase. If he sends this type of text during the night any time after 9:00pm, think twice about it- this could be a booty call.

What are some texts that you won’t return?
