When people glow up, they transform from awkward teenagers to confident, good-looking adults. But when homes glow up, they literally shine, thanks to an infusion of shimmering pieces of décor. If your home could use a little bit of sparkle, here are six changes to make for the ultimate sheen from contributor Kacey Mya.

1. Let Natural Light In

Even if your home is filled with glitter, sequins and metallics, none of it will shine in the dark. So, start your glow-up project by throwing back your curtains and letting in the natural light. The sun’s rays will bounce off all of your accessories, making the place look that much brighter. Plus, you’ll soak up all of the benefits that come with spending time in sunlight.

The sun’s rays give your body a dose of vitamin D, which helps strengthen your bones. Exposure to a bit of natural light can help improve your mood and ward off depression, too. In other words, your home will glow and you will feel it from the inside out.

2. Use Mirrors to Your Advantage

Once the sunlight’s pouring in through your windows, you can multiply its effects with a few strategically hung mirrors. As they’re meant to do, the mirrors reflect what’s in front of them; because you’ve opened your curtains, your mirror will be able to amplify the sun’s glow.

This is an excellent trick for spaces with fewer windows, as it creates the right amount of natural light. And, if you add a mirror to a smaller area, you’ll see that it adds depth and makes the whole place appear larger.

3. Crystallize Your Cabinets

Put down the hot glue gun — we’re not suggesting you bedazzle the fronts of your wooden cabinetry. Instead, we recommend you have a look at the knobs and pulls attached to your kitchen cabinet doors. Are they dull? Or are they made of a non-shiny material, like wrought iron?

If the answer to either of those questions was “yes,” swap your pre-existing fixtures for a set of crystal knobs and pulls. First, figure out the types of cabinet hardware you need: it’s best to replace a knob with another knob, for example, because you won’t have to drill any new holes. Then, use a screwdriver to detach your original hardware and replace it with its newer, shinier counterpart. You could have this sophisticated bedazzling project done within a few hours.

4. Upgrade Your Glassware

For many people, the cup cabinet is one filled with a mismatch of plastic tumblers, sippy cups, coffee mugs and a few remaining glasses from the set they bought when they moved in. This assortment is unquestionably functional, but there’s not much shine to be seen — especially when serving a meal to family or friends.

So, upgrade your glassware to include a shiny new set of cups. They don’t have to be fancy, crystal goblets: a matching set of simple glasses will make every meal look much more sophisticated. And, if your dishware is lacking, you might consider updating those as well. If you’re lucky, you might find a set in a metallic hue that adds even more shine to your dinners, whether you’re serving caviar or mac ‘n’ cheese.

5. Don’t Forget Low Lights

Not everything that shines has to be bright. Instead, you can restore glow to your home with a set of candles. Each flickering votive will give off just enough light to create a romantic, cozy scene. You can place them inside of a glittery candleholder, too, so that the dancing flames put on more of a light show.

You can even use candles to light up your fireplace in an unconventional way. Rather than chopping wood, placing it inside of the hearth and lighting kindling beneath it, you can put an array of pillar candles inside. This is one of the best ways to decorate a non-working fireplace, too — you can still gather around and enjoy the fire, even if it’s coming from a gently burning candle.

6. Mix Metallic Hues

Finally, you can quite literally bring shine into your décor with metallic accents in all different shades. From silver to rose gold to the brightest of brasses, a little bit of metal adds big bling to any space.

Just make sure you read up on the do’s and don’ts of mixing different metals. For example, you’ll want to choose which color will be your primary metallic and which will be its accent. And don’t be afraid to mix a cool color with something warmer: rather than clash, they’ll bring out the best in each other and make any space feel extremely stylish.

7.Let It Shine

It’s that simple: throwing back the curtains, lighting a few candles and adding some metallic accents will kick-start the glow up you imagine for your home. And, by letting your place shine, you just might feel a little bit of that glow warming you up as you fall in love with your abode once again.
