20 Conversation Starters
Whether you’re going on a first date or meeting someone for the first time in a work setting, over drinks, an event setting and so on. Starting up a conversation with a stranger can be daunting. That’s why below I have put together a list of ways of breaking the ice.
You never know who you are going to meet and how that will change the direction of your life. Don’t hide in a corner, you use one of the “lines” below to get the conversation started!

- How do you know so and so….? ( If you’re in a setting where you’re both there celebrating or invited by someone this is a great way to break the ice and you have a common connection. This can help spark the conversation to go further.)
- Where are you from? A great way to learn about someone and make them feel comfortable.
- What do you do? Simple and to the point, don’t you think?
- What did you want to be when you grew up?
- Do you have any pets, if so what’s their names, how old? Everyone loves talking about their pet/pets.
- Have you read any good books lately? Great way to know what they’re into, what sparks their interest or imagination.
- Do you like to travel, where has been your favorite place that you have visited?
- What’s your favorite cocktail ( If they’re already drinking find a common ground, ask if they have tried, that mixed with something else.)
- Do you have any suggestions for local places to eat?
- What’s your favorite type of food?
- What’s your favorite movie?
- If I was to check your most recently played song on your playlist, what would it be?
- Do you have any siblings?
- Where did you go to school, ( High school, college,etc.)
- What show are you watching right now? You might get yourself a new Netflix and chill buddy!
- What’s the last concert you went to? You might get yourself a second date, 😉
- Do you speak any other languages?
- What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
- What do you like to do for fun? I know generic but very helpful in getting to know someone.
